Abstract

This comprehensive review examines Bharatanatyam classical dance as a multidimensional therapeutic modality within the Indian cultural and philosophical context. Drawing upon ancient texts including the Natyashastra, Ayurvedic principles, and contemporary neuroscience research, this paper elucidates how Bharatanatyam facilitates healing across physical, psychological, emotional, energetic, and spiritual dimensions. The therapeutic framework encompasses physical conditioning and rehabilitation, emotional processing through the navarasa (nine emotions), cognitive enhancement through complex movement patterns and energy balancing, and spiritual development. Clinical applications demonstrate efficacy in addressing neurological conditions, developmental disorders, mental health challenges, and general wellness. This paper argues that Bharatanatyam represents an evidence-based therapeutic modality rooted in ancient Indian epistemology that addresses the integrated nature of human wellbeing. The synthesis of traditional wisdom with contemporary research validates the therapeutic potential of Indian classical dance traditions for addressing the fragmented approach to health characteristic of modern medicine.
