Accepting an invitation

Review only when the manuscript falls within your expertise and you can meet the requested deadline. Tell the editor promptly if you need more time or cannot review. Disclose financial, personal, institutional or collaborative conflicts before accepting.

Confidentiality and double-blind review

Treat the manuscript and review correspondence as confidential. Do not contact authors directly, try to identify them, share the manuscript or use unpublished findings for personal advantage. Obtain editorial permission before involving a colleague.

Assess the evidence

Evaluate the research question, methods, analysis, reporting, interpretation, limitations and references. Identify reproducibility concerns and distinguish essential changes from optional improvements. Be constructive and specific, referring to relevant passages, figures or tables.

Integrity concerns

Report suspected plagiarism, fabrication, image manipulation, duplicate publication or ethical problems privately to the editor with supporting details. Avoid unsupported accusations in author-facing comments. Do not demand citations to increase your own or another journal’s citation count.

AI and confidential material

Do not upload confidential manuscripts or identifiable research data to public AI services. A reviewer remains responsible for the accuracy, reasoning and confidentiality of the report. Discuss any proposed tool use with the editor first.

Submitting your recommendation

Separate comments for authors from confidential advice to the editor. Explain your recommendation using evidence rather than a score alone. The editor makes the final decision.
