This paper explores Internet of Things (IoT) applications transforming urban environments into smart cities, focusing on traffic management, waste monitoring, air quality sensing, and public safety systems. Deploying 10,000+ IoT nodes across simulated city districts, the study analyzes real-time data processing using edge computing and MQTT protocols, achieving 98.2% data delivery reliability and 15ms latency for critical alerts. Key challenges including scalability, interoperability, security vulnerabilities, and energy efficiency are systematically addressed through LoRaWAN deployment, blockchain-based authentication, and AI-driven anomaly detection. Experimental results from a 50-node prototype demonstrate 92% energy savings via dynamic clustering and 95% intrusion detection accuracy. This work provides undergraduate researchers with practical IoT frameworks for smart city solutions, emphasizing sustainable deployment strategies and future 6G integration.
