This survey article systematically reviews reported design approaches, architectural innovations, and optimization methodologies for double-tail dynamic latch CMOS comparators with modified Widlar current source configurations as documented in existing literature. Comparators represent fundamental building blocks in analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, particularly in high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), operational amplifiers, and precision signal detection circuits. The double-tail dynamic latch comparator architecture has emerged as a preferred topology in modern CMOS technologies due to its superior speed, low power consumption, and compact silicon area compared to traditional StrongARM and folded-cascode implementations.
This survey examines the fundamental operating principles of double-tail dynamic comparators, key architectural components including tail current sources, latch logic, and regeneration stages, and commonly reported design optimization challenges. The integration of modified Widlar current source circuits as alternative biasing mechanisms to traditional current mirror configurations is analyzed to highlight performance trade-offs regarding current precision, temperature stability, and power efficiency. Furthermore, performance evaluation metrics and simulation methodologies—frequently conducted using advanced CMOS technology nodes—are reviewed to highlight trends in comparator performance optimization across design variants.
By consolidating and analyzing existing research contributions, this article provides a structured overview of double-tail dynamic latch comparator design practices and modified Widlar current source implementations, serving as a conceptual reference for analog circuit designers, mixed-signal engineers, and researchers seeking comprehensive understanding of contemporary comparator design approaches rather than proposing novel implementations.
