Mental health challenges are increasing globally, creating an urgent need for accessible and scalable support systems. Traditional therapy methods are often limited by availability, affordability, and stigma, leading to delays in timely intervention. This study proposes a Conversational AI framework that integrates Natural Language Processing (NLP) and facial expression recognition to provide empathetic, real-time mental health support. The system leverages NLP techniques to analyze user comments, text inputs, or spoken transcripts, identifying emotional cues, sentiment, and potential risk indicators. Simultaneously, facial expression analysis using deep learning models captures non-verbal signals such as stress, sadness, or anxiety, which are often overlooked in text-based systems. By fusing multimodal data—verbal and non-verbal—the AI chatbot generates context-aware, empathetic responses and offers personalized coping strategies or professional recommendations. The approach aims to enhance early detection of emotional distress, reduce communication barriers, and improve user engagement. Experimental evaluation on benchmark datasets indicates that the combined NLP and facial expression framework outperforms single-modality systems in accurately recognizing emotional states. This research highlights the potential of conversational AI as a supportive tool for mental health assistance, with the promise of augmenting, rather than replacing, professional care.
