Abstract

Visual impairment significantly affects an individual's ability to navigate, access information, and perform daily activities independently. This project presents an Intelligent Assistive System for Visually Impaired Individuals that combines Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, and Speech Processing to enhance user safety and accessibility. The system employs the YOLO object detection algorithm to identify obstacles and surrounding objects in real time using a camera feed. Detected objects are communicated through audio feedback generated by a Text-to-Speech engine, enabling users to understand their environment effectively. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) using Tesseract is integrated to extract and read textual information such as signboards, labels, and notices. A voice recognition module allows hands-free interaction through simple voice commands. For emergency situations, GPS based location tracking and SMS alerts are provided using the Twilio API. Experimental results demonstrate satisfactory performance in real-time detection and communication, improving mobility, independence, and overall quality of life for visually impaired users.
